Sweet Summertime…and Sour Summer Learning Loss

Summer vacation is a time to kick back, relax, and forget about school. The problem is that for many students, summer is a time when they forget about what they spent the past school year learning. According to Duke professor Harris Cooper, the best-case scenario for students over the summer is that they show little or no academic growth. In other words, students begin the next school year at around the same level they were the previous June. The worst-case scenario is that students can lose anywhere from one to three months of learning, which can be devastating to a child. While teachers do provide some review of the material covered in the previous grade level, one to three months of learning is an impossible amount of material to cover. Cooper observed that the area where summer loss is greatest is in math. This is particularly troublesome because math is a subject area that relies heavily on previous learning in order to advance concepts, and many parents are unable to offer adequate summer math support to keep their child on track for success.

Summer may be a break from school, but it should not be a break from learning. While there are many ways to keep your child engaged over the summer, one of the most productive is continuing or beginning tutoring sessions. Tutoring over the summer helps students remain actively involved in academic material, and gives them an extra edge for the beginning of the next school year. Rather than letting students lose knowledge or simply remain at the same level, summer tutoring continues learning outside the classroom. The tutor can help target skills that need further strengthening from the previous school year and can give your child a head start on material for the next year. Your child will have the extra confidence and skills they need to start the upcoming school year out right.
