Family Dinners

Coming home for a few weeks after being away at school for three months meant that I had a lot of adjusting to do. One of the things that has been most strange to encounter is the fact that my parents no longer eat dinner at the dinner table together. Instead, they eat in front of the TV. On TV trays. They spend hours in front of the television. From the 6 o’clock news to Jeopardy, then to the Food Network for whatever reality TV show is playing. It’s painful to be a part of.

While it may be too late for my family to get back in the swing of things, for families with younger kids the importance of eating together cannot be stressed enough. So come on, people. Is it that hard to spend an hour a night together, just talking?

What are some other things that have surprised you when you’ve returned home after a long stint at home?
